I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the culture of all lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.
—Mahatma Gandhi
The Idea of Culture and the meaning behind it has alway interested me. Having two parents with very different cultures, I have always been intrigued with the way a culture can be defined: by understanding and admiring the clothing, language, religion, and depth behind each individual one. There are many people throughout the world that do not know what is going on outside of their town let alone outside of the United States, but unlike those people I would like to say that I am or at least I try to be aware of what is going on in the world within and outside of the United States.
When I came across Gandhi’s quote I had an immediate connection to it, and believed that it summarize exactly what I want my works of art to do. There are hundreds if not thousands of different cultures one can belong to, but a lot of the conflict in the world is due to people’s beliefs and cultures. With my work I want to open the viewers mind to different cultures, to the beauty and the sorrow. But while I want people to realize and acknowledge other culture I also want them to be mindful of their own, accept the wonders of it and be proud. I believe I belong to many different cultures, the culture that I was brought up in: my town, my household, my moms family and the culture I was always taught about by my father. To me the beauty of the world is the diversity of it, if we all believe and live the same way what would this world be like.
